Senior Buyer

Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Purchase goods, materials, components or services in line with specified cost, quality and delivery targets
  • Ensure continuous supply of required goods and materials and communicate any supply problems which may pose a risk or impact on business operations
  • Monitor market trends, competitor strategies and market suppliers
  • Research and evaluate areas of opportunity and reduce costs where possible
  • Develop creative and innovative procurement processes
  • Develop ideas and strategies to improve operational efficiency, add value, aid business performance and work towards a strategy of continuous improvement
  • Negotiate contracts, improved prices and terms of business with suppliers and review opportunities to make business savings utilizing negotiation and procurement best practice tools and methods
  • Assess and evaluate suppliers and undertake performance reviews to ensure contract compliance and manage performance improvement activities
  • Ensure that a professional and consistent approach is taken in relation to all supplier relationships
  • Ensure compliance to company guidelines, purchasing policies and procedures guidance.
  • Explore alternate sources for goods and materials
  • Assess tenders and quotations from potential supplier
  • Prepare purchase orders in line with final negotiations with selected suppliers and in line with organizational targets and requirements
  • Undertake research on and evaluate existing and new suppliers
  • Contact suppliers to resolve price, quality, delivery or invoice issues
  • Support and/or drive FVMT continuous improvement initiatives
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues that are causing extra time to work through in the department; i.e., streamline processes/procedures
  • Create vendor purchase orders
  • Track and maintain expedite orders
  • Enter and maintain vendor account information in the business management system
  • Research potential vendors’ abilities and products provide SWAT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunities, and Threat) analysis
  • Submit for vendor pricing/delivery quotes
  • Lead or work on complex purchasing projects
  • Maintaining proper inventory levels of materials used on a regular basis
  • Research potential vendors’ abilities and products
  • Ensure continuous supply of required goods and materials and communicate any supply problems which may pose a risk or impact on business operations
  • Deliver briefs, updates and reports as and when required
  • Where appropriate, mentor and coach other buyers to enhance their abilities within the department and engagement in their work
  • Assist where able in training less experienced team members
  • Maintain a high level of performance in carrying out the goals of the department and the company
  • Work collaboratively, negotiate and engage with stakeholders and suppliers regarding new projects, supplies and initiatives and advise of impact of change on purchasing and production activities
  • Stay current and up to date on any changes that may affect the supply and demand of needed products and materials and advise others of any impact
  • Attend meetings and update others on issues or concerns, in particular when there is a risk which could prevent the organization meeting customer demands or where there are over capacity concerns
  • Support product change requests and review and communicate the impact on supplier capacity plans
  • Maintain and manage good supplier relationships and ensure good communications, and update records with new and existing suppliers
  • Record, maintain assigned vendor scorecards.
  • Investigate vendor responses and make needed improvements as directed by department manager
  • Work with Quality Manager to do supplier audits
  • Partner with Accounting to manage/maintain inventory numbers
  • Document and measure vendor performance (product quality/on time delivery)
  • Address all issues regarding vendor and associated products
  • Cost analysis of various products and vendors associated with scope of work
  • Negotiate pricing and terms of service – find ways to reduce long term costs while maintaining/improving the quality of purchased goods or services.
  • Adhere to ISO procedure qualifications
  • Participate in 5-S projects
  • Perform other duties as assigned by manager


  • A bachelor's degree with 4 + years purchasing experience in a manufacturing environment is required
  • An associate's degree with 8 + years purchasing experience in lieu of the above mentioned requirement


  • 7 + years buying/purchasing experience in a manufacturing organization is required
  • Experience in a metal manufacturing/fabrication business is highly desired but not required
  • Advanced knowledge of metal and fabrication materials including, but not limited to fasteners, hardware, metal finishes, chemical compositions, and physical properties for mechanical use
  • Moderate knowledge of applied coatings and chemical treatments is preferred
  • Familiarity with defense related requirements such as ITAR, Flow Down Requirements, and Certificates of Conformance is preferred
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and contribute performance-based solutions is required
  • Ability to add value by reducing cost and making business improvements
  • Understanding of vendor relations and specific function capabilities as they relate to metal fabrication processes desired
  • Demonstrated ability to manage own work load with minimal supervision required
  • Able to work effectively in a team environment as well as an individual contributor
  • Experience establishing and maintaining good working relationships with internal and external customers

Specialized Experience:

  • Advance Proficiency in Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook and an enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems; Infor Cloud Suite Industrial (SyteLine) preferred
  • Project management experience required and support any purchasing activities
  • Manufacturing blue print reading experience desired
  • APICS or ASM cert is a plus
